The purpose of this role is to identify the current and future almond agricultural affairs and issues needs of a broad and deep range of stakeholders, and devise and execute strategic programs to meet these needs.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Identify current and future strategic needs; devise and prioritize research programs and outreach related to almond production and issues – often in concert with Industry Communications and Outreach, Global Communications, Sustainability and Environmental Affairs, as well as with the CEO and SAIC, and in cooperation with industry members, the ag research community (including the University of California system and USDA), allied agencies, other commodities, and ag‐related groups.
  • Through oversight of the Senior Manager, Agricultural Research, evaluate researcher qualifications, research proposals, experimental design and research plans, recommend selection of researchers, and manage the Working Groups.
  • Develop and administer SAIC program budget often in concert with Sustainability and Environmental Affairs, and Almond Quality and Food Safety.
  • Together with the Director, Sustainability and Environmental Affairs, direct execution of SAIC meetings including determining agenda, preparing materials, preparing and presenting reports and presentations, and executing directives of the Committee; oversee preparation of minutes, filing and archiving of production research proceedings, and related support for the committee.
  • Either execute or oversee outreach: writing and/or compilation of research results and/or issues‐related summaries of agricultural affairs matters for a wide array of audiences and venues (e.g., internal audiences including the Board of Directors ABC publications, ABC website, the Almond Conference, agricultural publications, regulators, media and the public); develop and orally present to a wide array of audiences, including those listed above under the outreach bullet and conduct media interviews.
  • Maintain current knowledge and evaluate trends of issues and technical matters related to or affecting almond production, by devising research, support, and outreach programs to address these.
  • Assume a leadership role in building and leading collaboration, which is commensurate with the size of the California almond industry and its leadership position in California/U.S. agriculture.
  • With Sustainability and Environmental Affairs, devise and direct the agricultural content for the Almond Conference and oversee presentations by researchers at conferences, symposia, and meetings.

  • The position is supported by a team of 2 direct reports and a total staff of 3.
  • The post is located in Modesto, California at the Almond Board headquarters.
  • Moderate domestic and occasional international travel is required.
  • Written and oral fluency in the English language is required.

Candidate Profile

We seek a forward‐thinking, scientifically capable, articulate, and results‐oriented leader and convener who constructively engages with a broad array of constituencies.


  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in leadership and management of relevant agricultural and/or food and human nutrition research programs and projects and related scientific and administrative staff.
  • A track record of successful strategic and tactical leadership of agricultural and related scientific affairs research efforts and communication thereof.
  • Demonstrated ability to convene stakeholders, build consensus, and chart an actionable path forward.
  • Experience working with California agriculture and specialty crops and state and federal research institutions, regulatory agencies, and ag‐related groups.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of experimental design, hypothesis testing, and analysis of research results with the ability to direct the work of scientific researchers, technical, and non‐technical support staff.
  • Principles, theories, and generally accepted body of knowledge relating to almond production and environmental issues with the ability to identify both near term and long term strategic agricultural research and issues needs and devise programs to meet those needs
  • Skilled in identifying research and extension infrastructure needs and providing a research strategy roadmap.
  • Ability to provide oversight of staff in evaluating research proposals, experimental design, research plans, statistical analyses, and conclusions.
  • Skilled at contracting and budgeting including preparing requests for proposals, evaluating research proposals, and managing research contracts.
  • Effective written and oral communication including preparing and presenting technical papers, seminars, and presentations to a wide array of audiences including media presentations.
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining working relationships with state and federal agency liaisons, institutions, commodity and other ag‐related groups.

Education Level:

  • A Ph.D. or D.Sc. in a relevant agricultural or food discipline is required.
