This position will support all production-related communications to consumer and customer audiences. Working with management and stakeholders across the organization, this position will track issues, craft messaging, create and edit content, develop news stories, and help determine how and when to communicate. This position will require participation at industry meetings and events, as well as working with internal and external stakeholders to support the development and execution of communication plans and generally nurture the public image and reputation of the California almond industry. It also supports sustainability and production-related content development in partnership with the production-oriented teams and communications/marketing teams as well as online community management of ABC’s sustainability-focused social media properties.


With manager oversight, this position leads the Almond Ambassador and community relations programs as execution liaison with the industry communication and digital teams. In addition, this position is responsible for being the first point of contact for consumer media, managing inquiry logistics, media opportunities, and developing and maintaining relationships with spokespeople and journalists.



This hourly non-exempt position specializes in sustainability and production-oriented communication and ensuring messaging consistency and maximization with research and information produced within production-oriented committees and working groups.



The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties.

  • Working with management, facilitates content development, distribution and execution, including relevant content on all websites; in coordination with Shared Services, manages editorial calendar for this subject matter, including ABC’s blog content; and executes social media activity
  • Facilitate media relations functions for incoming consumer media inquiries and proactive press interaction covering almond-production topics, managing opportunity logistics and, as necessary, developing supporting materials; build relationships with key consumer media resources to enhance availability of messaging to stakeholders and establish the Almond Board and almond industry spokespeople as a go-to resource
  • Provide management for ABC’s sustainability-focused social media properties including recommending posts and engagement, monitoring audience engagement and recommending responses for both paid and organic posts, and synthesizing and sharing key learnings to improve strategy
  • Working with management, lead the Almond Ambassador program via management of and relationship development with industry spokespeople; ensuring robust tracking and use of digital tools; developing and reviewing related content; synthesizing and sharing key learnings to improve strategy
  • Develop and manage project timelines and team deliverables and/or contribute content on specific issues affecting regional or global reputation management; as needed by regional leads, review key messages and other communications resources (e.g. infographics, web content) to be used in different global markets
  • Work with management to develop and review subject-matter related proactive and reactive content including key messages, blog and social media content, visual and video assets, and other content; ensure a consistent tone of voice across sustainability communications vehicles and sustainability messaging
  • Develop messages for all mediums including print, digital, social, video and audio, and provide high quality content that is relevant, easy to understand and of value to applicable audiences
  • Maintain comprehensive message and material database, housing original works and communications; be responsive to information needs across the organization and become go-to-resource for other departments and Marketing staff; support the development of toolkits and/or briefings on key issues
  • Stay abreast of ABC-funded production and environmental research by attending committee meetings and liaising with appropriate staff, informing and supporting related proactive and reactive communications
  • Facilitate the optimization of strategy for owned, earned and paid program components by tracking results from various monitoring tools and synthesizing and sharing key learnings
  • Stay abreast of ongoing production-oriented issues work conducted by outside parties by attending meetings, workshops, and building relationships on behalf of ABC for marketing and communications programs
  • Stay abreast of target audiences research findings and strategy development, integrating learnings into content development and other functions
  • Work with management to identify and manage resources to ensure production-oriented content and resources are top-of-mind, accurate, current and consistent with emerging learnings; and oversee the distribution and awareness of these resources to appropriate staff and agency partners
  • Work with committee liaisons and other subject matter experts to understand and communicate production-oriented data and accurate messaging; bring the customer/consumer mindset to subject matter experts and committees to ensure messaging is not just correct but is also motivating and relevant; manage the distribution of information to marketing and communications staff and industry partners
  • Lead development of materials and program management for community relations activities with strategic oversight from management
  • Develop materials for sharing key results from media monitoring as it relates to almonds and the Almond Board of California with applicable external stakeholders
  • Liaise with researchers and other subject matter experts for communications and marketing outreach activities; ensure subject matter experts understand relationship between their work and communications and marketing activities
  • Maintain relationship as Almond Board communications liaison with partnership organizations (i.e. Environmental Defense Fund, Sustainable Conservation)




  • Ensure all designed, external materials are reviewed and approved through ABC Global Image compliance process and filed in the appropriate final locations
  • Facilitate USDA/AMS content review process for relevant content
  • Working with management, provide oversight and tracking for assigned budget
  • Manage calendar with flexibility for modified timelines and emerging issues
  • Work with management to ensure agency resources are managed to meet communications goals
  • Work with management to prepare materials and presentations for Committee and Board of Director meetings; review minutes for action items and accurate direction; interpret Committee and Board direction for program administration
  • Build relationships with other professionals in the fields of production and environmental research, and communications
  • Suggest and implement approved processes/workflows to ensure subject matter communication uniformity including centralized documentation, development of toolkit resources and ongoing training of staff/agency partners
  • Travel to meet with agencies, researchers and other experts, media and influencers;
  • Prepare correspondence, coordinate logistics and calendars, keep and maintain a variety of record




Knowledge of:

  • Agricultural production, sustainability, food safety, regulatory, technical and communications practices
  • Verbal, or written, summarization of technical and research material for lay persons
  • Communication media including print, digital, social, video and audio
  • Social media tools and general capabilities of website design and editing applications
  • Authoritative knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and accepted elements of style
  • Principles and the effective practice of public speaking including appropriate audio-visual aids
  • Methods and techniques of printing and graphics

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain (a) valid passport(s) for international travel; national and/or international travel is required  
  • Attend and participate in work activities outside of normal working hours


ILLUSTRATIVE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A typical way to obtain the above knowledge and skill is a combination of education and experience equivalent to:


A BA/BS degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field with 3-5 years of experience in agricultural/sustainability communications with strong writing, editorial, and publishing experience. Agricultural and/or scientific background is highly preferred.


PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are:

  • Working at a video display terminal for extended periods of time
  • Vision sufficient to read handwrit­ten and printed documents and computer screens
  • Speech and hearing sufficient to communi­cate by phone and in person
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to use a variety of office equipment and tools, computer key­boards, and to manipulate papers
  • May lift up to 30 pounds (15 kilos) and manipulate heavier objects using dollies
  • Travel 10-30%
