Indian Snack Mix (Chivda)

Indian Snack Mix (Chivda)

This beloved Indian snack mixture is salty-sweet and mixes well with afternoon tea or any time of day. Many are fried, but this one is pan-toasted for a more nutritious mixture.

2 teaspoons vegetable oil

1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds

2 cups corn flakes

1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

1/4 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon chili powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice

1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 cup roasted almonds

1/2 cup roasted unsalted pumpkin seeds

1/2 cup golden raisins

In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and heat until they begin to pop. Quickly add the corn flakes and stir them for one minute. Add the spices, salt, lemon juice and sugar, toss and stir mixture for one minute. Add almonds, pumpkin seeds and raisins. Toss and stir everything until toasted and fragrant, about 5 to 6 minutes. Spread the snack mix on a baking sheet to cool.

Store the cooled snack mix in an airtight container.
