Liven up a simple bean salad with a little spice and a serving of slivered almonds and you've got a dish everyone can enjoy.

1/4 pound fresh haricot verts (thin French green beans) or green beans

1 (14-ounce) can black beans

1 (14-ounce) can garbanzo beans

3/4 cup frozen corn, thawed

3 green onions, diced

1/2 cup sliced almonds, roasted

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

1/4 cup olive oil

2 tablespoons sherry vinegar

Juice of 1/2 lime

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

Pinch ground red pepper

Gather green beans into a stack; trim and slice into thirds. Place in a steamer insert inside a small pan with 2 inches of water. Cover and turn heat to high; steam 5 minutes or until bright green and tender-crisp. Dunk in a bowl of ice water to maintain bright color, and drain. Combine green beans with black beans, garbanzo beans, corn, green onion, almonds and cilantro. In a separate small bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients. Pour over salad and dress gently. Serve immediately or store covered and refrigerated up to two days.
