Selecting Tarps for Stockpiles

May 9, 2013

When choosing tarps for stockpiles, keep in mind that white-on-black tarps are best at keeping an even temperature in the stockpile, which minimizes condensation. When ordering tarps for the 2013 crop, keep in mind that research shows tarp type/color can play an important role in minimizing temperature fluctuations and condensation in stockpiles, which lead to mold growth. Of particular concern in the outer portions of stockpiles are the “green molds,” which include the Aspergillus mold that produces aflatoxin.

White on black is best at minimizing temperature fluctuations and the resulting condensation. Consider using this for piles with higher-moisture-content in-hull product. Clear produces the highest temperature fluctuations, but is fine for dry in-hull product. White is intermediate between clear and white-on-black.
