The Almond Conference by the Numbers

Nearly 2,000 growers, handlers and allied industry members squeezed into the Modesto Centre Plaza one last time for The Almond Conference before it moves to Sacramento Dec. 11–13, 2012. The 2011 conference featured 50 sponsors, 160 exhibit booths and 40 symposium and keynote speakers, who provided education, entertainment and enlightenment for all.

The enlightenment began on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 6, as some growers participated in a California Almond Sustainability Program (CASP) workshop to assess their current management practices, while others were both educated and entertained at the Industry Media Training event. Later in the evening, conference Premier Sponsor BASF hosted the annual Opening Reception at the Gallo Center for the Arts, where industry members Matt Visser and Mel Machado displayed their almond photography for all to enjoy.

Wednesday began with the official welcome by the Almond Board of California’s (ABC’s) President and CEO Richard Waycott and Board Chair Mike Mason, who welcomed the audience and introduced the first session, “Growing a 2-Billion-Pound Crop ... It’s a Game Changer.” All in all, more than 20 symposia provided educational opportunities, including research findings and ABC program highlights, and featured keynote speakers.
