Congressional Aide Visits California Almond Country

Ryan Hanretty, legislative assistant to Rep. Jeff Denham, visited Central California in September to learn about the California Almond industry. Hanretty covers agricultural issues for Denham, who represents California’s 19th Congressional District, which includes parts of three of the state’s top almond-producing counties: Fresno, Madera and Stanislaus. A third of California’s almond handlers are located in this district.

While in Modesto, Hanretty met with Almond Board staff to discuss global marketing programs and the extensive research ABC funds in production, environmental and food safety areas. He also toured a local processing facility to witness how almonds go from orchard to table, and to hear firsthand accounts from industry members of the opportunities and obstacles facing California’s highest-value ag export.

“It was extremely helpful to see the Almond Board’s facilities and tour a local producer and processor operation for a hands-on experience, allowing me to better understand the impacts of legislation and regulation on the operations of the almond industry,” Hanretty commented.
