Government Affairs — California's Water Supply: Challenges and Opportunities for 2012

Almond growers will continue to face an ongoing struggle over water supplies appropriated through the Delta, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) relicensing processes, groundwater management regulation and the San Joaquin River settlement. That was the forecast provided by DeeDee D’Adamo, senior policy adviser to U.S. Congressman Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced), in remarks at the 2011 Almond Conference.

D’Adamo provided a historical perspective on past drought concerns, flood management issues, increased population pressures on water supply and water quality, aging infrastructure constraints and climate change considerations. Turning to the new year, she predicted state and federal agencies will be partnering with regional water planning efforts to further clarify and prioritize California’s current and future water needs, as well as their associated project requirements. The state Legislature will again consider the water bond that was placed on hold prior to the last election.

ABC will host a water symposium in the spring for industry members to learn the latest developments. For more information or to propose topics, please contact Caroline Stringer at (209) 343-3256.
