Hullers and Processors Speak on Behalf of Almond Industry
June 2, 2014
In August 2013, the Almond Board of California (ABC) entered into an agreement with the Almond Hullers and Processors Association (AHPA) to provide the almond industry with a greater voice in issues relevant to the industry. The agreement allows ABC to provide AHPA with expertise on key subject issues so the AHPA can advocate for those issues without ABC violating the covenants of its federal marketing order. Originally, the agreement covered the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the impacts of Proposition 65, but it is now expanded to include bee issues, pesticides and water.
Since the agreement became effective, it has been implemented several times. First, it was leveraged to submit comments to the Food and Drug Administration on FSMA. ABC submitted comments on industry impact based on science-driven data, while AHPA provided key points and requested specific action based on ABC data. Also, at the recent Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee hearing held in Modesto on the 2014 water bond, AHPA President Kelly Covello and industry member Jim Jasper spoke during the public comment period urging the committee to take action that would benefit agriculture. ABC provided talking points to AHPA for use in preparing comments.
ABC will continue to leverage the agreement with AHPA as new opportunities arise.
