Objective Forecast Released

California Almond objective forecast for the 2012?13 crop year was announced June 29 at the offices of the Almond Board of California (ABC). The forecast, funded by the Almond Board, is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service ? California Field Office (NASS/CFO). According to the USDA-NASS/CFO, the California Almond objective forecast for the 2012?2013 crop year is 2.10 billion meat pounds, which is based on 780,000 bearing acres.

Doug Flohr, statistician for USDA-NASS, California Field Office, said the forecast is up 5% from the May 3, 2012, subjective forecast of 2 billion pounds. As of May 31, 2012, the estimate is up 3% from last year?s crop of 2.018 billion pounds.

The average nut set per tree is 7,048, down 4% from the 2011 almond crop. The Nonpareil average nut set is 6,571, down 12% from last year?s set. The average kernel weight for all varieties sampled was 1.48 grams, down 1% from last year.
