Technical Services Specialist

REPORTS TO:         Director, Quality Assurance and Industry Services

 

This role is responsible for providing technical services in support of programs overseen by our Almond Quality and Food Safety team.  This position will also provide general support to the Industry Services Department and programs as well as administer research projects, generate frequent status reports and perform other duties as assigned.  This is a non-exempt position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties.

Pasteurization Program:

  • Manages pasteurization program validation and audit submission process and schedule
  • Manages program database and workflows; logs and tracks exchange of information; Conducts annual inventory of all users and process validations to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Reviews validation reports and audits to ensure accuracy and compliance; Issues summary and non-conformity reports; Monitors closeout of non-conformities   
  • Maintains Technical Expert Review (TERP) panel and validation workflow; Prepares annual TERP contracts and reviews invoicing
  • Liaises with California Department of Food and Agriculture SPI and other auditors to frequently cross check audits; Organizes and conducts ongoing training for USDA and CDFA SPI on audit requirements for Custom Processors/Handlers with processes
  • Manages application and review process for Process Authorities; Manages annual application submission and review for Custom Processors/Custom Processor Treatment Plans, Direct Verifiable Users, DV Auditors and Process Authorities; Oversees ongoing training for all pasteurization program users
  • Maintains pasteurization program resources including program participant lists, ABC pasteurization website facts sheets, validation guidelines and other materials as appropriate

Pre-Export Check (PEC) Program:

  • Assists PEC Program Managers in tracking verification activities and schedules; Prepares reports of aflatoxin concentration in PEC consignments
  • Tracks and prepares reports on non-conformities
  • Assists with Goods Return Process; Tracks Goods Returned

Research Services:

  • Works with ABC Staff and researchers to manage process project proposals, prepare research contracts and administer research budgets
  • Prepares ABC staff recommendations for committee review 
  • Monitors status of research projects; maintains contact with researchers for project milestones and to assist with information or needs; obtains project reports and presentations  
  • Maintains active database of ongoing research projects

Other Duties:

  • Maintains database for input of nutrient, quality and safety analytical data in conjunction with other staff and stakeholders
  • Coordinates sample collection, tracking and submission to laboratories samples in support of analytical or research needs; Participates in industry surveys and data collection
  • Tracks pesticide analytical data from laboratory and shares with Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) consultants to provide context; Drafts annual pesticide/MRL report for review
  • Creates and maintains reports, updates, data tables, charts and graphs of data; prepares PowerPoint slides or presentations for use at committee meetings or industry events

QUALIFICATIONS:

Skill in:

  • Implementing and managing process workflows and schedules
  • Critical review of data and reports; tracking, recording and reporting detailed information
  • Data analytics. Developing and maintaining data and information tables, charts and graphs, using spreadsheets, databases and graphing software; Requires strong database, Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Solid interpersonal skills to establish and maintain relationships with our valued stakeholders and team members
  • Using initiative and judgment to manage workload and accomplish tasks independently or with minimal supervision
  • Approaching work tasks in a highly organized and systematic manner
  • Strong skills in effective written and oral communications, including report preparation, correspondence, English grammar, spelling and punctuation.

ILLUSTRATIVE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A typical way to obtain the above knowledge and skill is a combination of education and experience equivalent to:

A Bachelor’s degree preferably in the sciences, data management or a related field and 3-5 years of related experience in areas such as food safety auditing, process validation work, manufacturing quality assurance, or data analytics. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are:

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time
  • Vision sufficient to read handwrit­ten and printed documents and computer screens
  • Speech and hearing sufficient to communi­cate by phone and in person
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to use a variety of office equipment and tools, computer key­boards, and to manipulate papers
  • May lift up to 30 pounds (15 kilos) and manipulate heavier objects using dollies
  • Travel estimation less than 5% of time
