Government Affairs

The Almond Board of California’s government affairs program is centered around educating stakeholders about the California almond industry and keeping almond growers/handlers aware of the issues that impact farming in California.

Our goal is to be a reliable source of factual, science-based information.

We accomplish this through building relationships with legislative staff in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. and serving as a primary resource when questions arise regarding California almond production practices, environmental concerns, or supply chain issues.

Our relationship building efforts include:
  • Visits to legislative/regulatory offices as well as arranging visits to orchards and almond facilities
  • Events such as the Environmental Stewardship Tour,  Ag Day at the Capitol, and the Almond Day Festival
  • Participating in the Home State program that sends almond snack packs to every California delegation office in Washington, DC
  • Providing information about the California almond industry through regular industry updates
  • Sharing fact-based data with state and federal offices about the impact of regulations on the California almond industry
  • The ABC Government Affairs program also monitors both Federal and State legislation that may have an impact on the industry.

DOING MORE THROUGH COLLABORATION

Almond Alliance of California Partnership

The Almond Board of California (ABC), as a Federal Marketing Order (FMO), is prohibited from lobbying on legislative issues. Without a dedicated “voice” at the table, the almond industry is limited in its ability to have a unified presence to address the legislative and regulatory issues that impact the right to grow and process almonds in the Central Valley of California.

Since 2013, ABC and the Almond Alliance of California have worked together under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to provide the California almond industry with expanded opportunities to advocate for industry priorities.  Specifically, the MOA empowers the Almond Alliance to pick up where ABC must leave off - advocating policy changes at any level of government, leveraging the investment growers have already made in research through ABC.  This also ensures resource efficiencies and mitigates redundancies by allowing ABC staff to provide technical expertise to the Almond Alliance when assessing policy and taking positions.  ABC and the Almond Alliance work on issues of mutual concern and complement each other’s unique strengths.
